Are you eating healthy but still having symptoms?
When I think back on all my years of work, something that stands out to me more than anything else is how I was feeling at the time. I know that’s not what should be coming to mind when thinking about my achievements and successes, but at the time my symptoms were controlling my life.
I remember:
sitting through meetings with stomach pain
feeling bloated and tired every time I ate.
struggling to keep my eyes open after lunch.
being scared to eat because I didn’t know how it would make me feel.
not feeling well but having to stay at work because there was no one else to do the work.
not being able to eat the food at company parties and feeling restricted, or giving in and regretting it later.
being unable to focus on my work because my brain fog was so bad.
feeling like the life had been sucked out of me.
feeling “stoned” from the stomach medication my doctor prescribed for me.
always feeling stressed.
I have struggled with digestive issues for most of my life, never feeling well after I ate. Later on, and especially during my first 10 years after college, I also struggled with low energy, brain fog, and weight gain.
This didn’t only affect my work, but my personal life as well.
Going out to eat was hard because I knew I wouldn’t feel well after. I couldn’t enjoy pizza with everyone else, or if I did, I would regret it, so I’d have to order something bland that I thought would settle well.
I remember being nauseous and having to go home to throw up so I could come back and still enjoy my time with my friends.
Traveling was hard because I didn’t know how I’d feel.
I did so much experimenting over the years and tried different protocols. Some made me feel worse. Some didn’t make a difference. And, some showed some improvement, but nothing on an ongoing basis.
I was eating healthy and exercising regularly. I even cleaned up my diet more by cutting out processed foods and focusing on clean, whole foods. I did feel better, but I was still gaining weight and couldn’t count on ever feeling well after eating. It was always a surprise.
I even tried cutting out gluten and dairy, but didn’t see much change, so figured that couldn’t be it. (not realizing that I was eating “gluten free foods” that contained ingredients my body didn’t like)
When I attended the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, I learned the concept of bioindividuality, which means that what works for one person, doesn’t necessarily work for another. So, all these protocols (or diets) I was trying, could contain foods that weren’t right for MY body.
That’s when things really started to click. I started seeing a functional medicine practitioner and figured out which foods MY body didn’t like.
This is what happened:
the weight came off quickly. (My body had been holding onto SO much inflammation.)
my digestive symptoms improved and I could finally make it through the workday or go out to eat and not worry so much. Of course, this took some time to really get in tune with my body, but it was significantly better.
my brain fog cleared and I could finally focus on my work and other stuff again.
I had energy to make it through the day and no longer felt myself falling asleep at my desk in the afternoon.
When you constantly eat foods that are not right for YOUR body, this causes inflammation, which shows up as various different symptoms such as:
digestive issues
skin issues
sinus issues
headaches
joint problems
low energy
brain fog
weight gain
When you continue to eat foods that your body is sensitive to and other toxins, since inflammation is at the root of basically every disease, this can eventually lead to disease (Diabetes, heart disease, autoimmune disease, alzheimer’s, etc).
Figuring out which foods YOU might be sensitive to so you can limit them or eliminate them from your diet can not only improve your chances of avoiding these diseases, but will make it so the symptoms you experience that are impacting your quality of life, improve.
