I hope you're having a great week and have something fun planned for the long weekend! I'm going ot Newport Beach and Catalina Island with a couple of my friends, which I'm super excited about! I've never been to either place. This is the start of my frequent traveling over the next few months, which I always enjoy because it gives me something to look forward to and helps break up the monotony of being home.
If you can remember, I went on the Keto diet a few months ago. My main reason for trying it out was to reduce the inflammation in my body and get rid of my digestive symptoms. Of course, I was hoping for weight loss as well! So, I committed to it, and was diligent about tracking my carbs and staying within the recommended range to stay in ketosis. Since you need additional electrolytes when you're on a low carb diet, I made sure I was getting them either through supplements, or by drining salt water.
I noticed that i never seemed to get that huge energy spike that people talked about getting, one of the many benefits of the keto diet. I also never got to the point when I wasn't hungry. In fact, my cravings for food had significantly increased so bad to the point that I wanted to eat all the time and never felt satisfied. I craved sweets and cheese. I'd give in and allow myself to have cheese sometimes, even though I'm not supposed to eat dairy. I would find ways to make Keto friendly sweets or fat bombs. I also noticed that after going through the keto flu that my energy never went back to where it was prior to starting the diet. I barely even had the energy to walk a mile. And, my legs were so heavy that it was so difficult to even do that. I didn't know what was going on. I thought maybe I was slipping in and out of ketosis. Getting a ketone meter just wasn't in my budget, so I couldn't actually test my ketones, but I knew my carbs were in the right range, so I kept going I just thought that eventually I would start to feel well again. I also wasn't losing any weight. I actually had put on a few pounds.
A couple weeks ago, I was listening to a podcast and learned that the keto diet won't work for you if you can't break down fats. I had never given it much thought that maybe I couldn't. But they mentioned that if you have low blood pressure, it could be because you aren't breaking your foods down correctly and absorbing the minerals from them. My blood pressure had been pretty low that last few times I had checked it. Usually around 94/64 or somewhere around that. It had always been 113/72. AFter listening to that podcast, I did a lot more research, and realized that the reason I felt so weird it because my electrolytes were not balanced, despite me drinking salt water and taking supplements. I learned that if I had continued, that could have eventually lead to seizures. I also realized that I had some symptoms that would suggest that I'm not breaking proteins or fats down properly, and had basically taken away the only fuel source that my body knows how to use.
I have since taken myself out of ketosis, ordered some supplements that should hopefully correct my digestion so I will be able to digest other nutrients correctly, and am feeling so much better.
I just wanted to share this with you to explain 2 things:
that everyone is different and a diet that works for one person might not work well for another person. This is called bio individuality. So many people are very successful on a keto diet, but it just doesn't work well for others. I do hope that I can try it again because I'd like to experience all the positive benefits that it offers.
digestion is key with everything. If your digestion isn't working correctly, you may never get the results you are looking for. It has to be woring correctly for you to break foods down correclty, eliminate toxins, and lose weight. That is why I include it as part of my programs.
