Healthy football snacks that won't mess up your health goals

 I hope you had a great weekend!  We had some really nice weather over the weekend.  I went to Tijuana on Sunday for my first time!  I've been to Rosarito and other parts of Mexico, but never to Tijuana.  It was nice to go there for a day and just walk over the border.  We got lucky and didn't have a line.

 

Now that it's the new year, many people are trying to stick to their New Year's resolutions and trying to be more active and eat healthier.  Since football is still going on for a few more weeks, it can be difficult for some people to eat healthy during the football game. Many people associate football with eating a lot of snacks and drinking a lot of beer, and it can be difficult to break that association.  My favorite "football snack" was always taco dip with chips.  What is your favorite "football snack"?the 

 

It is still possible to snack during football games and not mess up your health goals.  Some tips are:

  • Make your own snacks instead of buying them from the store.  That way, you'll be able to control the ingredients better.  You can even look up healthier versions of certain recipes that will taste just as good.  I like looking on Pinterest because you can put in your search terms - like you can search for "paleo football snacks" or "gluten free football snacks".  You can also just do a google search.

  • To minimize the amount that you eat, make sure that you eat something before you go to watch the game or before it starts.  Then, you won't be starving when it starts and less likely to overeat.

  • You don't have to deprive yourself of the less healthy snacks, but try to minimize the amount that you eat or eat them in combination to healthy snacks.  For example, eat some veggies, but also allow yourself to eat the chips and taco dip.

Here are some healthier snack options:

  1. veggies and guacamole or hummus

  2. If you can find Siete brand tortilla chips, I recommend those with guac, salsa, or another dip

  3. Fruit with almond butter or sunbutter (preferably the natural kind, not the kind with a ton of sugar)

  4. kale chips or homemade zucchini or sweet potato chips

  5. Terra chips

  6. Tortilla chips, rice chips, or bean tortilla chips with bean dip or homemade taco dip

  7. Deviled eggs

  8. Homemade grilled wings or other meat

  9. Jalapeno poppers made with the jalapeno, cream cheese, and wrapped in bacon (not fried)

  10. Fruit with a yogurt or coconut cream dip

I hope this gives you some ideas on what to do at your next football get together if you're trying to stick to your health goals.
