Thanksgiving with food restrictions

 Happy Wednesday!  I am finally starting to feel awake after going to San Francisco last weekend.  My flight to come home was at 6:45am on Sunday, meaning that we had to get up at 4:30am, so I did not get much sleep while I was there, but I had so much fun and we packed so much in in basically 1 full day!

Now, it's time to get ready for Thanksgiving.  I have spent Thanksgiving as both a vegetarian and with different food restrictions, so I thought I'd share some tips with you on what to do if you do have food restrictions or if someone else has food restrictions. Most of us are probably used to traditional Thanksgiving foods like mashed potatoes, turkey, gravy, green bean casserole, stuffing, etc.  Most of that food contains gluten and the mashed potatoes aren't dairy free.  That doesn't mean that people who can't have those foods can't still enjoy them.

My suggestions are:

  • There are so many recipes out there for various food restrictions.  I recommend going on Pinterest and searching for whatever the food is that you're trying to make and the restriction.  There are recipes for vegetarian gravies, gluten free pies, vegan mashed potatoes, and basically anything that you are looking for.

  • You can also search for recipes on google.  Certain people, like Diane Sanfilippo, The Paleo Mom, Against All Grain, and Brittany Angell have various recipes for food restrictions or Paleo recipes that taste just as good as the original recipes that we are all used to, and they are much healthier.

  • If you don't want to make something from scratch (or make 2 versions of something if you still plan to make the originals), many stores will have allergen friendly versions of the foods.  You might have to go to a more organic type store, such as Whole Foods or Sprouts, rather than a large grocery store.  They'd be more likely to have what you are looking for.

  • If you or someone else has multiple foods they are intolerant/allergic to, make sure you read all of the ingredients to make sure that the food doesn't contain any of those ingredients.  For example, if someone can't have gluten or dairy, just because a pie is gluten free, does not mean that it is also dairy free.

  • If you are the one with intolerances/allergies and you are going somewhere else for Thanksgiving, it might be a good idea to bring something that you know you can eat because you can't count on someone else knowing what all of your restrictions are.

  • If you are making something for Thanksgiving and you know someone will be there with intolerances/allergies, make sure you know what's in it in case they have questions about whether they can eat it or not.  That's always helpful.
